Growing Strawberries Tips

Strawberry Growing Tips

Growing strawberries is a popular homeowner garden project. Strawberries are the first fruit to harvest, usually available by mid spring. The basics of how to grow strawberries is straight forward for the accomplished gardener but for the beginning gardener planting strawberries can be a little tricky if you are going to have a successful crop. Growing strawberries is one of the most popular homegrown fruits for most gardeners. Growing strawberries means fresh berries, plump and red, for strawberry shortcake topped with a dollop of whipped cream. If this description makes your mouth water, just imagine the different ways you can use the strawberries you grow in your own garden.

Strawberry Plant Basics

1. There are three types of strawberry plants and different methods of how to plant strawberries. The different strawberry plants are: June Bearing, Everbearing and Day Neutral strawberries. June Bearing strawberries are plump, well-shaped and sweet, and are ready to be picked in mid- to late June. These are seasonal berries with only one large yield crop. Harvesting takes place over a three-week period.

2. Everbearing strawberries ripen in the spring, blossom again and ripen in late summer. These berries tend to be smaller in size, but still taste sweet and you get more than a single crop.

3. Day Neutral strawberry plants continue producing fruit throughout the growing season. Similar to Everbearing strawberry plants. They tend to be smaller, sometimes misshapen and produce fewer runners.

How to Plant Strawberry Plants

Gardening is all about location. Choosing the right location for planting strawberry plants will provide the best chance to produce plump berries with a high yield. Strawberry plants require at least six hours of full sunshine each day to grow to maturity. Select a well-drained location, preferably with sandy loam. The soil should have a pH level of 5.8 to 6.2 which will provide for a healthy level of acid/alkaline to grow strawberries. Make it easy on yourself and choose a spot for your strawberry patch that makes watering easy. Strawberries require frequent watering to ensure a healthy crop.

Be careful to select only healthy, disease-free plants from a reliable nursery or mail-order garden catalog. Thirty plants will keep a family of four supplied with delicious berries throughout the strawberry growing season and have plenty left over for making jam or freezing.

1. There are several methods for growing the luscious red berries. Grow strawberries in matted rows, hills or containers for those with limited space who want a few fresh strawberries.

2. Before planting, be sure to till the cleared soil. Fertilize using a ratio of 10-to-10-to-10 fertilizer after June Bearing harvest or second harvest of Everbearing and Day Neutral strawberries. Over fertilizing can result in a green leafy strawberry patch with few or no berries, so use caution. Mulch your strawberry patch using 2 inches of weed-free straw.

3. Provide one to two inches of water every week from the time plants begin blossoming through harvest.

Matted Rows

1. A strawberry plant that sends out a plethora of runners (June Bearing varieties) grow best when planted in a matted row. Set your plants 18 inches apart in rows with at least 4 to 4.5 feet apart. Dig a hole large enough to spread the roots out. Hill the hole and place the crown flush with the soil. Cover with dirt, leaving half the crown exposed. Pat the soil around the plant and give it a thorough watering. Move on to the next plant.

2. Pick off all blossoms, old leaves and runners. You will need to continue picking blossoms from the plants throughout the first year to ensure the energy goes toward establishing the plant and not producing berries. As the plant produces runners, train them to stay in the row. You will not have strawberries the first year, but the pay off the next is worth the wait.

Planting in Hills

1. Everbearing or Day Neutral varieties of strawberry plants grow best in hills. Create a raised bed by mounding the earth to about 8 inches high and 2 feet across. Set plants about 12 inches apart. Staggered rows work with approximately 2 feet between each row.

2. Unlike June Bearing strawberry plants, remove the runners from Everbearing plants to encourage fruit formation. Pluck off blossoms the first year until July. These plants work hard continually producing strawberries and become worn out. Treat Everbearing strawberries as annuals or plan to dig up and grow new plants every three years.

A strawberry bed in your garden makes an attractive ornamental ground cover as well as a patch for picking and eating. Decrease the plant stress and shock by planting on cool cloudy days. Do not water at night. Water your strawberry patch in the early mornings so the sun and breeze can dry the leaves before night falls. These strawberry growing tips will help you have a great strawberry patch for years to come. Enjoy your strawberries!

How to Make a Paper Airplane

April 16th, 2010

Paper airplanes are simple and easy to make and yet people write so many articles and discussions on the topic. Maybe the reason is that there are hundreds of different paper airplane models and hundreds of ways to make a paper airplane.

Instead of sharing common sense tips, that are supposed to be applied to any kind of paper airplane, but in fact don’t work for any specific model, I’ll share quick and easy guides how for two specific models.

Let’s go ahead:

The “Arrow” paper airplane.

The Arrow is probably the simplest and most popular airplane that even a kid can make. It flies far and fast. Here is how:

1. Take a square sheet of paper. You can make a square from a standard Letter size paper by folding diagonally and cutting the extra paper that remains outside of the two stuck triangles.

2. Fold the square at the vertical middle (to receive a rectangle) and reopen it.

3. Make two diagonal folds in such a way that the two corners of the upper side will meet their edges at the fold which you made in the previous step.

4. Now you need two folds that are harder to explain. They start from the new formed nose and diagonally end 2 inches before the opposite edges. And image will greatly help here.

5. The airplane is almost ready. Now the center cease must be folded to outside.

6. Now fold both wings one inch from the center to form the airplane corpse and leave the wings square to it.

That’s it. I know it’s hard to understand by explaining, so visual guides can be found at the end of this article.

The “Moth” paper airplane.

This is another simple and well flying one.

1. Start with a square sheet of paper like with the Arrow.

2. Again make a single fold in the middle of the sheet.

3. We follow the same steps like with the arrow – make the diagonal folds to form a nose.

4. Here’s the first difference. Thus formed triangle from the folded edges must be folded to the center of the airplane (so you’ll have a rectangle with triangle in it).

5. Fold the new rectangle corners diagonally to the middle. This is similar to the folds you made in the Arrow, but these should end at the middle of the sides.

6. This forms a strange figure of the airplane – something like trapezium and a rectangle. The folded nose is now semi-covered by the last folds, so you need to turn it back to cover their edges and hold them.

7. The first cease now enters the game – fold the winds to form the airplane

8. Now form the corpse. This time the wings should be folded a little bit diagonally because the Moth has shorter nose than tale.

That’s it, the Moth is ready.

Each of these airplanes can be built in five minutes. The same is valid for most of the other paper model airplanes. The only thing that you need is a sheet of paper, skillful hands and of course good guides.

I am sure it isn’t easy with only textual descriptions! For this reason we have built great interactive guides for building the moth and the arrow paper airplanes We have more guides on the site as well, so visit us!

Listen More, Speak Less — 5 Steps to Better Listening

April 14th, 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com

As a coach and consultant, I spend lots of time listening to people describe their situation, their problem, their frustration, etc. My clients expect me to offer insights, knowledge, and perspectives to help them create better results either personally or professionally. In many respects, I am a “professional listener.” From this experience, I have found that hearing is easy and listening is hard.

A quick review of some statistics about listening, compiled by the International Listening Association (http://www.listen.org/), yields some insight into why listening is so hard:

  • Most of us are distracted, preoccupied or forgetful about 75% of the time we should be listening.
  • We listen at 125-250 words per minute, but think at 1000-3000 words per minute.

As hard as it is to listen effectively, it is still vitally important. Take a look at these additional statistics from the International Listening Association:

  • Immediately after we listen to someone, we only recall about 50% of what they said.
  • Long-term, we only remember 20% of what we hear.
  • More than 35 business studies indicate that listening is a top skill needed for success in business.

My first thought as I began this article was: “I’m about to communicate an idea that everyone has heard before.” However, my experience as a “professional listener” tells me that the topic carries enough importance to justify the reminder. More importantly, I’ll share five tips to help you improve your skill in this vital leadership competence.

1. Listen to understand, not to respond

Effective listening goes beyond hearing someone’s words. Effective listening creates an environment where the other person feels that you understand them.

This tip applies to attitude more than it does to behavior. Many people view dialogue like a tennis match where the two parties square off and hit the ball back-and-forth. In this approach to conversation, both parties are adversaries trying to “score the point.”

To listen effectively, I suggest that you view dialogue more like a pitcher and catcher in a baseball game. The pitcher (speaker) throws the ball for the catcher (you) to receive it. The catcher only throws the ball back after he has it firmly in his grasp.

In other words, listen to receive the meaning. Once you understand, then you can respond.

2. Be quiet

Being quiet gives you the opportunity to hear the words, the tone, and the meaning behind the words. It gives you the chance to observe the speaker’s body language.

To help you remember this tip, I’ll share two quick statements with you:

  • “When your mouth is open, your ears are closed.”
  • “LISTEN and SILENT have the same letters.”

3. Let them finish their thoughts

In other words, don’t interrupt the speaker. From the previous tip, this idea seems obvious. However, I have seen many arguments and misunderstandings that stemmed from interruptions. It’s hard to remain silent. It’s even harder to remain silent until someone has completely expressed their idea.

4. Maintain eye contact

Effective listening means observing everything about the speaker’s message. People communicate at least as much with their body language as they do with their words. Good listeners learn to “listen” with their eyes as well as with their ears.

If you choose to work on something else (answer e-mail, fill out paperwork, etc.) while someone is speaking to you, they will not “feel” that they were heard.

5. Ask questions to ensure that you understand

Just because you heard the words and observed the body language, don’t assume that you understand. If a particular point is unclear to you, ask a question to clarify it before you respond.

Even if you think you understand the message, make sure you do by clarifying it with the speaker. You might say something like:

  • “Just to be sure I understand you, let me repeat back to you what I thought you said…”
  • “I heard you say… Is that correct?”
  • “If I understand correctly, your concern is…”

When you clarify, remember to let them correct your understanding. You don’t have to agree with their perspective. You do have to make sure that you understand it.

Good leaders are good listeners. Effective listening helps to resolve conflicts, build trust, inspire people, and strengthen teams. It often requires you to “bite your tongue,” and, from my personal experience, I know that it can be hard work. I also know that the results are worth the effort.

Granny Square Crochet – How to Crochet a Basic Square

April 13th, 2010

There are many different ways to crochet a granny square. With some patterns, you begin with the center stitch and crochet in a circular motion around the piece. And other patterns will be crocheted in a continuous horizontal back and forth motion. The back and forth pattern is the most basic stitch and is the easiest to learn.

When learning to crochet a basic granny square, try to use 4 ply worsted weight yarn, and any brand will do.

It is also a good idea to use a crochet hook between the sizes G and H while learning to granny square crochet.

Depending on the size of your hook (and yarn) these instructions will should give you a crocheted granny square approximately 8 inches.

Here’s how to make a basic square.

First, make a chain of 26, LOOSELY.

Row 1: Once you have made your chain, skip the first chain and single crochet (sc) into the next chain.

Do this all the way across until you reach the end. You will have made a total of 25 single crochets. You have completed your first row. This first row is considered the front piece of your work.

Row 2: Make one chain, then turn your piece over. Now single crochet in the top of each stitch all the way across. Again you will have made 25 single crochets all the way across.

Row two is considered the back side of your work.

(Each time you finish a row in this pattern you will make one chain before you turn it over because it keeps your piece straight and square.)

Row 3: Make one chain, turn, and single crochet in each stitch across. Total single crochet stitches made: 25 sc.

Repeat Row 3 until your granny square measures approximately 7 inches and you have the right side facing up. Starting at the corner you have stopped at, make a chain, and single crochet three times in the corner. This creates your corner. Now make 23 single crochets across your pattern until you reach the next corner. Once you are at the next corner, again, single crochet three times in that corner. You will follow this technique all the way around you piece until you reach your beginning pointing. That is where you will close off and finish your piece.

Many times when crocheting around the edge of a granny square you will find that while the top and bottom of the piece may have the exact number of stitches (25 in this pattern), the sides will not equal what the top and bottom have. When this happens you can either increase the number of single crochets in a stitch, or decrease a stitch. Just be sure to do it on both sides in order for the piece to keep its shape.

There are so many different techniques to granny square crochet, this is the most basic granny square. With this technique, you can spice it up a little by using two pieces of yarn rather than one, or making your edge a different color than the rest of the piece, or you can make each row a different color. The options are yours for choosing.

The Magic Square Lo Shu

April 12th, 2010

The original square was first mentioned thousands of years ago; however, its original schemes were lost, and no specific descriptions are available either. Even Confucius had not seen the original schemes.

In its modern form, LoShu was published in the Chinese treatise in around 1200 AD. Since ancient times, Lo Shu was regarded as a nonary scheme which “portrays the vital properties of matters”. In Chinese metaphysics, this square represents the concept of space connected with the concept of time.

The square has many astounding properties, like mathematical and metaphysical ones, which are studied and used in Chinese numerology. However, we will discuss the properties of the square that pertain to feng shui.

In feng shui, this square is used for the analysis of energy in any limited area of space (house, apartment, room, surface of a table, etc.). The energy map based on LoShu is usually called a geomantic map (this is a modern Western term, not ancient Chinese one). Both the trigrams of the Early Heaven and the trigrams of the Late Heaven can be used to understand the numbers of the Lo Shu square. The Late Heaven trigrams are used for the analysis of the indoor energy.

The square is called magical because the sum of the numbers in its rows, columns, and diagonals equals one and the same number – 15. If we divide 15 by the number of rows or columns (3), we obtain 5. Number 5 is in the center, representing the equilibrium of the middle. The remaining numbers are around it. The larger numbers can be regarded as Yang, smaller numbers can be regarded as Yin, and 5 is a neutral number.

Since the Sung period, the Chinese started to transform LoShu by subtracting or adding numbers to it. There are countless other options for such transformations. For instance, you can swap the numbers in opposite corners, you can rotate the scheme like swastika, and you can rotate it clockwise or counterclockwise.

Another similar method to divide the space into sectors is a Bagua map. People often ask: what’s better – the Lo Shu square or Bagua map? Both, the square and the map are used to determine the sectors in space. Different schools give preference to either the square or map, and so do different feng shui practitioners. Once you learn more about each, you will be able to make your choice.

Bagua sectors: There are 9 Bagua sectors, each of which is 45°.

LoShu sectors:

- Sector 1 is in the North, its value is 30°, and its element is Water.

- Sector 2 is in the Southwest, its value is 60°, and its element is Earth.

- Sector 3 is in the East, its value is 30°, and its element is Wood.

- Sector 4 is in the Southeast, its value is 60°, and its element is Wood.

- Sector 5 is in the Center, its element is Earth.

- Sector 6 is on the Northwest, its value is 60°, and its element is Metal.

- Sector 7 is in the West, its value is 30°, and its element is Metal.

- Sector 8 is in the Northeast, its value is 60°, and its element is Earth.

- Sector 9 is in the South, its value is 30°, and its element is Fire.

The Insiders Guide to Professionally Installing Kitchen Handles and Knobs

April 10th, 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com

For a start, fitting kitchen cupboard and door handles is quite a simple process. As with most home D.I.Y projects, time and preparation are the key factors to a proper job. First things first, think of what tools you have at hand. Described below are 3 different methods for measuring and fitting handles. These 3 methods are a guide to show some of the most popular ways to fit kitchen handles to get you going. Read them through to see which best suits your skill level and the tools you have at hand, or think up your own way using some of these ideas. Happy reading.

Method # 1

Limited tools? This may be the way for you.

Start off with a piece or card. Look for something with a square edge larger than your handle. Try an old cereal box, it should be big enough and should have square edges.

Next hold the handle up against your door and take a measurement of roughly where you want the handle positioned from the top and side. Plot these measurements on the card by measuring the distance of each hole from the edges of your door and make sure the hole centres (the distance from the centre of both holes) are exactly the same as your handle. If you are installing knobs you only need to do the one hole (sorry that one was obvious)

Note: this is your template so take your time to get this right!

Tip: Test your template out on a spare piece of wood first to check the holes are the correct distance apart, and that the handle is correctly positioned.

Hold the template up against the door, maybe use a strip or two of masking tape to hold the template in place. To ensure the template is positioned correctly try holding a stop on the door edges (a piece of wood or any flat block) to push the card up to.

When the card is positioned use an awl to push through the marked points on the card and mark the hole points on the door. If you do not have an awl use any sharp pointed device that will mark the door like a skewer or wood screw.

Remove the card template, note down the hole positions from the top and side of the door and make sure the hole centres are accurate. Hold the handle up against these marks to make sure you are still happy with the positioning and then drill the holes.

Finally screw the handles onto the door being careful not to over tighten these are usually only M4 screws (metric 4mm diameter) as standard and do not need to be tightened using both hands!

Mark out and drill all the other doors, making sure you check all the markings before you drill to make sure they are all uniform. For left and right handed doors just turn the card over.

Method # 2

Do you have a set square?

If you are pretty handy with a set square and a ruler/tape measure this method may be as quick or quicker than the previous method.

To prevent marking the door use some masking tape to cover the edges and place a strip where you wish the handle to go roughly. Hold the handle up to the door and measure where the holes are going.

Draw the tape measure down from the top of the door and mark (horizontal line) the distance from the top of the door for the first hole then mark the second hole distance (making sure the hole centres are exact).

Then take the set square and mark on it (use some masking take on the surface if it’s hard to mark) the measurement from the edge of the door. Now just run the set square down the side of the door and mark (vertical line) the position for the holes. This will be the point where the horizontal lines already on the door meet the mark on your set square.

Method # 3

Got all the tools?

The best way to fit handles or do anything repetitive by hand is to have a good jig. What the heck is a jig? A jig is a device used to repeatedly mark out a measurement(s). If you have a hole punch with a paper guide that sticks out the bottom – that’s a type of jig.

If you have a large kitchen or fit kitchens it is well worth the time in making a decent jig for the job.

To make a simple yet accurate jig start with a piece of plywood or plank 19mm will be plenty sturdy enough but not thinner than 12mm. Cut it down to size to accommodate the handle size and the distance from the side and top. Make sure you have two square edges to work with and all cuts are square. As with the paper jig mark out the hole positions and drill the jig, double checking all measurements before drilling.

Next get two lengths of smooth (ideally planed) wood and screw them to the two square edges on the jig. These lengths of wood must be wide enough to overhang the thickness of the ply by about an inch either side. This will allow the jig to be used for both left and right hand drilling.

It is as simple as that. The only thing to remember when making any jig is to keep all edges square and straight. Take your time and double check all your measurements to ensure a proper job.

Remember you don’t need to be far out with your measurements to notice the difference and the more you look at it the more it will stand out.

Golden rule #1: Measure twice cut once (or in this case drill)
